Eric Hiegl, BRC’s Director of Land Protection and Stewardship, presented Coffey with the award and had this to say about his work in Watauga County:

“Kelly is an extraordinary individual who has made significant contributions to land conservation and agricultural preservation in northwest North Carolina. Kelly is a Watauga County Native, and his local roots instilled a deep passion for conservation and community action within the county.

He is a founding Board Member of Blue Ridge Conservancy and played a pivotal role in the early years by forming the foundation that contributed to our current success.Through his long-standing commitment thousands of acres of mountains and farms have been preserved in the Blue Ridge Mountains and surrounding Areas. In 1999, Kelly placed a conservation easement on his farm. This act reflects his commitment to protecting the natural and agricultural values of his property for future generations. He truly walks the walk.

Kelly’s multifaceted involvement in land conservation, agriculture, and community development showcases his commitment to preserving the unique character and natural beauty of the North Carolina mountains. His work and dedication will have a positive and lasting impact on the region.”
