FAQs about The Knob Project
Does Blue Ridge Conservancy manage the park and new sky bridge at the top of Howard Knob?
No. Blue Ridge Conservancy does not own Howard Knob County Park and has no role in the management of that Park or the new sky bridge.
Watauga County owns Howard Knob County Park and the new sky bridge, and all inquiries about them should be directed to the County. With Howard Knob County Park and BRC's nature preserve adjoining one another, each offering its own unique features and natural treasures, we see tremendous potential for collaboration. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with the County in order to ensure the best possible experience on the mountain for both our community members and visitors.
What will the project involve and what are the benefits?
Blue Ridge Conservancy's acquisition of the Green tract on Howard Knob fulfills a long-held conservation goal, protecting a quality high-elevation oak forest while preserving the scenic beauty and cultural significance that Howard Knob holds for our community. Looking ahead, BRC plans to develop natural surface trails, including a section of the Northern Peaks State Trail (NPST), boulder access, and an NPST trailhead with parking to welcome visitors. We are in the early planning phases and will share updates as the project progresses. In the meantime, we ask that anyone curious about the property bear with us as we carefully plan the best way to welcome everyone to the Preserve.
When will the property be open to the public?
Currently, BRC is actively fundraising and planning the recreational infrastructure that will open The Knob to everyone. The best opportunity for visitors to experience the preserve for the time being will be upcoming volunteer and climbing days, hosted by BRC and our partners. We will advertise these events as plans are finalized.
Our target is to have the preserve open to the public by 2027, with careful planning and successful fundraising making that possible.
How can you help?
We are so grateful for the community's support for the acquisition. We continue to fundraise for this next, crucial phase of the project, which will allow us to welcome our community to the property. Donations can be made to BRC.
