BRC Honored as "Nonprofit of the Year" by the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce

The Ashe County Chamber of Commerce held its annual members' meeting on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. The event, held at member business Hidden Pastures Farm, featured provisions from other Chamber businesses, including catering by Kalman’s Bon Appetit and decor by Country Charm. Ashe County native turned Nashville singer and musician Taylon Hope provided entertainment for the evening.

Another event highlight was the announcement of several annual award winners selected by the Chamber’s Member Services committee. Blue Ridge Conservancy was named the Non-Profit of the Year for its extensive land protection efforts in the High Country, particularly its recent purchase of Paddy Mountain and work developing the Northern Peaks Trail.

The Coolest Corner Award, given to a business or organization that drives tourism to Ashe County, “the coolest corner of North Carolina,” while also being celebrated by local residents, was awarded to the Ashe County Frescoes Foundation for its stewardship of Ashe County’s two fresco churches. The churches, both open to the public 24/7, attract thousands of visitors to Ashe each year.

Finally, the Cabot Hamilton Community Advocacy Award is given annually in memory of the Chamber’s previous executive director. It is designed to honor a tireless champion of the community who selflessly devotes his/her energies to the future of Ashe County. This year’s winner was Karen Powell, and Chamber Executive Director Kitty Honeycutt spoke about the recipient’s multifaceted service to and pride in her home. When asked about the winner’s commitment to the area, Mrs. Honeycutt described her as a dedicated and trusted voice for the betterment of Ashe County to countless community members and organizations.
